Caesar told his interpreter: ‘Tell him: I asked you about his lineage and you mentioned that he had a noble one amongst you. That is how the Messengers are; they are sent from the noblest of lineages of their people.
I asked you if any of his forefathers was a king. You said no. Had any of them been a king, I would have said: ‘a man seeking the dominion of his fathers’
I asked you if you suspected him of lying before this. You said no. I know for sure that he would not leave lying to the people and lie against Allah.
I asked you if the eminent or the weak follow him. You replied that it is the weak. They are who follow the Messengers.
I asked you if they increase or decrease. You said: they increase. That is how the matter of Faith is until it reaches completion.
I asked you if any of them his followers have turned away out of hatred for his religion after having entered it. You said no. That is how faith is when its joy blends in the hearts.
I asked you if you have fought him. You said yes and war is sijal between you; it’s sometimes on his side and sometimes on yours. That is how Messengers are; they are tested. And finally for them will be the good end.
I asked you if he deceives. You said no. That is how Messengers are.
I asked you what he commands you. You replied: He commands us to worship Allah and not associate anything with him. (You said:) he forbids you idol worship and enjoins prayer, truthfulness and virtue.
If what you say is true, he will own the place of my feet. I certainly knew that he was to come but I didn’t think that he’d be from you (i.e. the Arabs). If I was sure that I could reach him, I would have taken pains to do so. And if I was by him, I would have drunk the water of his washed feet. He then called for the letter the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه و سلم had sent to him through Dihyah Al Kalbi رضي الله عنه. It read:
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم. من محمد عبد الله و رسوله إلى هرقل عظيم الروم! سلام على من اتبع الهدى, أمّا بعد! فإنّي أدعوك بدعاية الإسلام, أسلمْ تسلَمْ يؤتك الله أجرك مرّتين. فإنْ تولّيتَ فإنّ عليك إثمَ الأريسيِّين. وَ يَا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ تَعَالَوْا إِلَى كَلِمَةٍ سَوَاءٍ بَيْنَنَا وَ بَيْنَكُمْ أَنْ لا نَعْبُدَ إِلا اللهَ وَ لا نُشْرِكَ بِهِ شَيْئاً وَّ لا يَتَّخِذَ بَعْضُنَا بَعْضاً أَرْبَاباً مِّنْ دُوْنِ اللهِ فَإِنْ تَوَلَّوْا فَقُوْلُوْا اشْهَدُوْا بِأَنَّا مُسْلِمُوْنَ.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
From Muhammad, the slave of Allah and His messenger to Hiracl, the ruler of Rome!
Peace be upon who follows the guidance. To proceed:
I invite you to Islam. Embrace Islam and you will be safe, Allah will give reward you twice. But if you turn away then on you will be the sin of Al Arìsiyyìn (the people of Hiracl). And O people of the Scripture! Come to a word that is just between us and you, that we worship none but Allah, and that associate no partners with Him, and that none of us shall take others as lords besides Allah.’ Then, if they turn away, say: ‘Bear witness that we are Muslims’.
The room filled with uproar. The travellers from Quraish were moved out. ‘The business of Ibn Abi Kabshah (i.e. Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه و سلم) has certainly become great. The king of Rome fears him’, Abu Sufyan said.
He later recounted: ‘I remained certain (from then on) that he would be victorious until Allah guided me to Islam’.
Despite his vast knowledge of the trueness of the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه و سلم, Hiracl did not embrace Islam. His extreme love for kingship and dominance got the better of him, thereby earning him the sin of himself and that of his people just as the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم had said.
