Muhammad ibn Idris Ash-Shafi’ee رحمه الله was one of the greatest scholars the Ummah ever saw. Apart from being an exceptional scholar, he was also a gifted poet. Muzani visited him in his last illness. He narrates:
‘How have you made morning?’ I asked.
‘I have made morning leaving this world, parting from my brothers, drinking from the cup of death, encountering my sinful deeds, and coming to Allah. I don’t know if my soul will get Paradise that I may congratulate it or the Fire that I may offer it my condolences.
Then he cried and said:
و لما قسا قلبي و ضاقت مذاهبي
جعلت رجائي نحو عفوك سلما
تعاظمني ذنبي فلما قرنته
بعفوك ربي كان عفوك أعظما
فما زلت ذا عفوعن الذنب لم تزل
تجود و تعفو منَّة و تكرُّما
فلولاك لم يسلم من إبليس عابدٌ
و كيف و قد أغوى صفيك آدما
When my heart hardened and I was at loss
I made my hope a means to Your Forgiveness
My sins were grave but when I compared them
To Your Forgiveness, My Lord, Your Forgiveness was greater
You cease not to be the One Who forgives, You cease not
To be Generous and Pardoning out of Kindness
If it was not for You no slave would have been safe from Iblis (Satan)
How so, when he even lured Your Friend, Adam
Ahmad ibn Hanbal says: I saw Ash-Shafi’ee in a dream and asked him: ‘O my brother, what did Allah do to you?’
‘He forgave me, crowned me, gave me in marriage and told me: ‘this is because you did not pride yourself upon what I gratified you with and nor did you marvel and be haughty in what I bestowed upon you’‘.
