عن أنس بن مالك رضي الله عنه قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: ثلاث مهلكات شح مطاع، وهوى متبع، وإعجاب المرء بنفسه
(رواه البزار والطبراني)
In the lines of Rasoolullah’s (sall Allahu alaihi wa sallam) sayings and how he perceived others, are a million lessons on personality and nature. Reading ahadeeth with faith and an open, receiving heart builds in the reader, subconciously, a base of understanding. Shaping his instincts and innermost thoughts. The wisdom gained from the words of the Prophet (sall Allahu alaihi wa sallam) keeps growing as the Muslim continues reading until it becomes the standard, firm and stable. And a lens through which the world is viewed.
These teachings that he left before departing this world, are unmistakeable. If they were to be followed to the letter, fake grandeur or decoration, how much ever loud, cannot remain standing.
There is a pull in the air towards self-absorption, grandeur and boldness. Stronger and more subtle than what we have known from past times. To top off, the extreme levels of ‘self-love’ that are encouraged neatly masks qualities and attitudes that otherwise would have been reprehensible without a second thought. The Muslim Ummah, young and old, is no exception in falling for this.
عن أنس بن مالك رضي الله عنه قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: [ثلاث مهلكات: شح مطاع، وهوى متبع، وإعجاب المرء بنفسه]
(رواه البزار والطبراني)
The Prophet (sall Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Three things destroy; greediness that is obeyed, and desires that are followed, and a person becoming self-conceited (and proud) with himself.”
(Al Bazzar, At Tabrani)
Focusing on one’s image excessively and lauding it, thinking of how next to laud it again, can easily make life’s supreme purpose to slip away from our hearts and lead to a mental frenzy. The calls to present an Islam more “open” and accomodating to the flings of today make everything go around in circles. This makes one think, where are we heading? What will be left?
