When ‘Good Intentions’ Mask Control: A Lesson from Colonisation

“We wish only good for you— [on condition it serves our goals].”

Not all who claim to wish you well truly mean it. If you are not deeply rooted in your values, such words can shake you.

If your foundation is weak—if you’re unsure of who you are, what you stand for, and what you’re capable of—you become vulnerable to manipulation.

When colonists invaded lands, they claimed to be doing “God’s work”—bringing civilization and purifying the natives—all while enriching themselves with the wealth of these lands.

But they weren’t acting alone. Their actions were backed by religious authorities, “scientific” studies, a newly emerging field of psychology, and carefully planned tactics aimed at dismantling local traditions and beliefs.

What you see happening today around the world— history has seen it play out before.

Yet, despite their power and strategy, they couldn’t break those whose hearts were fortified with iman (faith). No amount of fearmongering, destruction, or manipulated “science” could control minds that were protected by the Truth.

When the learned ulama and their followers stood firm, rejecting the false superiority of the colonizers, it shattered the invaders’ illusion of control. The so-called “uncivilized” were not submitting.

This reminds me of Verse 256 from Surathul Baqarah, where Allah says:
Whoever disbelieves in Taghut and believes in Allah, then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that will never break. And Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower.

If you strip away all but Him—Most High— and let no fear, no love, no silent devotion find in another what belongs to Him alone, then you have grasped a rope unyielding. It is a firm hold that will never break. You are steady, you are secure, and by His will, you will be alright.

In response to the stand of the pious, the colonizers—like tyrants before them—resorted to new rules and meaningless systems designed to justify and maintain their oppression of Allah’s slaves and His land.

Their goal was simple: silence those who would not bow to them.

History repeats itself. These tactics are not just relics of the past; they play out today on different levels—individually and globally.

There is a difference between choosing peace and respect and allowing your values to be erased out of fear, naivety, or passivity. The latter is weakness. It is a betrayal of your faith and beliefs.

Hold firm. Stay rooted. Not everything labelled as “good” is truly for your good.
