We have this almost unconscious belief that if someone is wealthy, they must be doing something right. Wealth usually comes with power and authority, too. So again– if they are powerful and charismatic too, they are, again, in our minds, doing it right.
We live with this illusion that wealth is proof of wisdom. This belief is misaligned and has cost us alot.
It has led us to become servants of status and slaves and admirers of those who seek to dominate us. But sadly, we don’t realise it sometimes.
Wealth and power are not endorsements from Allah.
Allah gives worldly gifts to both, the obedient to Him, as well as the disobedient. To use the level of affluence of an individual or nation to measure their righteousness, integrity, and understanding of life and purpose is a huge mistake. Materialistic, to say the least— but we won’t call it so, do we? This materialistic delusion is the very mistake that keeps us under the oppressor’s boot generation after generation.
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بن مسعود قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: إِنَّ اللَّهَ قَسَمَ بَيْنَكُمْ أَخْلَاقَكُمْ كَمَا قَسَمَ بَيْنَكُمْ أَرْزَاقَكُمْ وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ يُعْطِي الدُّنْيَا مَنْ يُحِبُّ وَمَنْ لَا يُحِبُّ وَلَا يُعْطِي الْإِيمَانَ إِلَّا مَنْ أَحَبَّ
أحمد (3672)Abdullah ibn Mas’ud reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, Allah has distributed your characters among you just as He has distributed your provision. Allah gives the world to those He loves and to those He does not love, but He only gives faith to those He loves. (Ahmad)
Now imagine the opposite.
Imagine we are a people who see through the façade; who are not impressed by the language of “equality,” “progress,” or “sustainable goals” when they serve injustice.
A people who measure worth by truth.
We would be a different people, wouldn’t we? Built different.
Such people would be unshakeable.
They would be an armour for the weak, fair in their dealings, unimpressed by worldly glamour — whether it gleams on land, air, or sea.
They would recognise insan wherever he stands. Not by what he owns, but by what he is.
