Whose Criteria Defines Your Worth?

There are various criteria, most of them subconscious, that people use to evaluate your worth. They gather different aspects of your life, add them together in their minds, and arrive at a conclusion about your value.

But this standard of evaluation may not be the standard of worthiness according to Ar Rahman, Allah Most High. So it becomes essential to pause and ask ourselves: What are we truly aiming for? What are we working towards? And ultimately, whose criteria are we living by?

If our aim is the criteria of Ar-Rahman—as it should be—then we must be extremely careful not to adopt the criteria of human beings and their measures of worthiness.
Part of giving preference to the standard of Al-Rahman over the standards of people is learning to consciously step aside in certain situations. To step aside means allowing others to form whatever evaluation they wish about you, while ensuring that they do not affect you in the least. Their conclusions do not shape your decisions, influence your thinking, or redirect your goals. In the least. Because you have truly stepped aside.

You may encounter many situations in life and seen alot where you have experienced something which is regarded as not very common, or your experience is a bit different, or the routes you’re taking or the paths you’re walking is considered very different. When that is the case, you must be especially conscious of the criteria by which you are being measured and, more importantly, the criteria by which you measure yourself.

Take time to purposefully reflect and ask yourself: Where should I step aside? Where should I engage? When is it appropriate to allow myself to be influenced, and when must I guard my direction? Remember, much of the evaluation people make about your worth is subconscious. They do it quietly, and they do it often based on your experiences and the events that have shaped your life. At times, they may assume that certain hardships or unusual circumstances diminish your worth. Yet those very experiences may be the means by which your rank is elevated in the heavens. What appears to reduce your value in the eyes of people may, in reality, increase your worth before Allah, Most High.
