وَ أوْحينا إِلَيْهِ لَتُنَبِّأَنَّهُمْ بِأَمْرِهِمْ هذا وَ هُمْ لا يَشْعُرُوْنَ
When the brothers of Yusuf took him away from his father with an undercover plan and a false assurance of his safety, they set out to execute their plot of getting rid of their brother.
They tied a rope around him and forced him into a well. Attacking him with insults when he pleaded for help from any one of them, the brothers struck his hands when he gripped the edges of the well to prevent himself from falling in. After that, they cut the rope when Yusuf was halfway down making him tumble into the water below. Yusuf found a rock, climbed onto it and stood soaking wet, forsaken and scared in the deep dark well.
وَ أوْحينا إِلَيْهِ لَتُنَبِّأَنَّهُمْ بِأَمْرِهِمْ هذا وَ هُمْ لا يَشْعُرُوْنَ
…and We revealed to him: ‘Indeed, you shall (one day) inform them of this their affair, when they know (you) not.’
Surah Yusuf:15
Ibn Kathìr رحمه الله explains:
Allah mentions His Kindness, Mercy, Assistance and His bringing of relief in the time of hardship. He revealed to Yusuf in that depressing situation to heal his heart and grant him consolidation: Don’t grieve for the situation you are in. For indeed, you will have ease and a beautiful way out. Allah will grant you victory over them and raise your rank. And you shall inform them of what they did to you.
This reminds of the words of the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلمadvising his young cousin ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas:
‘… and if they (the people) get together in order to harm you with something, they will not be able to harm you in anything except what Allah has written for you.
The pens have been raised and the papers have dried’. (Tirmithi)
